With an enormous amount of apps on the App Store, it’s sometimes hard to decide which ones are worth downloading. I’ve been a college student off-and-on for some time now, and I’ve come to realize that certain apps can really make your life easier. 

As a current graduate student, here are the top free apps I use the most for school. Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who uses a mixture of both Apple and non-Apple devices.

Spotify now lets anyone publish video podcasts through Anchor

Starting today, Spotify creators are now able to upload video podcasts to the platform. All creators within the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can use this feature. Using Anchor, Spotify’s podcast creation tool, it’s just as easy to publish a video podcast as it is audio.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is collaborating with Apple on creating the M2 chip, beating out LG Innotek. Samsung is developing the flip chip ball grid array (FC-BGA) for the new generation of Apple Silicon for 2022.

EU continues to fight to make USB-C the new charging standard

Could this mean the end of Apple’s lightning port in the EU? The EU is continuing to fight to make USB-C charging the standard on portable devices. The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee aims to create new rules that would help consumers no longer need a new charging cable every time they buy a new device. 

Apple taps Sago Mini app characters for upcoming TV+ preschool animated series

Apple has a new original series for kids and families in the works coming to the Apple TV+ platform. From the award-winning Sago Mini World app, “Sago Mini Friends” is a preschool animated series focusing on celebrating gratitude. 

In a recent email to Apple Pay customers, there are new promotions when using the service while ordering food online. Through April 25, when ordering ahead at Jimmy John’s and Panera Bread, those using Apple Pay can receive exclusive offers on their meals.

Instagram for iOS removes ‘Recent’ tab from hashtag pages for some users

For a small group of users, Instagram is testing more relevant content in “Top” and “Reels” tabs. By doing this, the company is removing the “Recent” tab from the hashtags page. Instagram says this feature aims to “make hashtags as valuable as possible for people.”

In a note to shareholders, Netflix reports that its revenue growth has “slowed considerably”. This news comes after losing 200,000 subscribers last quarter and potentially two million this current quarter. The streaming giant is navigating fierce competition with other services as well as having over 40% of its user base being unpaid subscribers.

Instagram users can now create and donate to fundraisers directly from Instagram Reels

Instagram users can now start fundraisers and donate money to fundraisers directly from Reels. Instagram Reels is the social media giant’s own short-form video feature, resembling TikTok. Meta announced this feature in a blog post about updates to Meta’s platforms and services in honor of Earth Day this week. 

With Earth Day this week, there are some new experiences to try on Apple Fitness+. From running to meditations to a new goal, there is certainly something for every subscriber.

Netflix continues foray into iOS gaming with ‘Exploding Kittens’ app and series

Netflix has been continuing to expand into the gaming sphere for a while. Announced today, the streaming giant and card game Exploding Kittens are collaborating on a mobile game and animated TV series. Exploding Kittens – The Game is “an exclusive version of the beloved mobile game” and will launch next month.

While we are still months away from a potential new Apple Watch debut, rumors have been speculating for some time. Unlike last year, we are expected to see at least two new watches from Apple in 2022. Here’s a roundup of what we could see from Apple’s line of wearable tech this fall.

Meta is launching Horizon Worlds on web and mobile

Meta is working on a web version of its virtual reality platform, Horizon Worlds. This news was revealed in a tweet by Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth yesterday. Thanks to this, users will be able to join the metaverse without owning a Quest VR headset.  

Apple will use its long-time camera module supplier LG Innotek and parts maker Jahwa Electronics for its folded zoom camera modules. This technology makes for a periscope-like lens on the iPhone with a smaller camera bump.

Unreal Engine-based game creation tool Core is expanding to iOS and Mac this summer

Starting this summer, you can create and play games using the Unreal Engine on iOS and Mac. Core, a free and currently PC-only app, is available on the Epic Games Store. The app itself is run on the Unreal Engine from developer Manticore Games. 

A police officer on Reddit shares their experience answering an emergency call from an Apple Watch via fall detection. The call was to an elderly woman’s home and the officer says the feature was “cool to see it in action.”
